Well, well, here is the cake I had hoped to bring to @cakepicnictour SF with me. 🥲✨ While the stacked and covered brown butter vanilla spice sheet survived the 9 hour drive, my will to decorate the night before did not.

Nonetheless, the adventure was absolutely worthwhile!! I was so glad to see many familiar faces from LA, and truly loved the creativity and flavors folks brought to the table. I had the honor of volunteering for & bringing a cake to @cakepicnictour at their 9/27 Los Angeles stop! Seriously, could not have asked for a better experience. I made so many incredible friends from all kinds of backgrounds– tattoo artists, software engineers, teachers, marketers, photographers, hobbyist and pro bakers– all with a shared passion for cake. Thank you for the teamwork, the stories and laughter, and for sharing your love of sweet things with the world!

We saw over 900 cakes show up to Tongva Park and the creativity was endless. The designs/decorations were *chefs kiss* 👌🏻 and the flavors knew no bounds (I’m talking salted corn & miso, purple pandan, guava, matcha strawberry, blueberry espresso, pumpkin spice, and loooots of chocolate). ~ The keys to the city for you AND your uber driver ~

I am so grateful for this opportunity and hope to continue supporting Cake Picnic as it grows (come to Oregon!!). 💖 Until next time, friends!! 🐜

I had fun trying out a new design, though wasn’t 100% satisfied with the outcome. Though I’ll be trying again, I made sure this cake was still put to good use. Who doesn’t love a free sample? (It was pretty darn delicious)

Barley + Red Miso + Toasted Sesame + Chocolate Chunk 🍪

This one packs an umami punch not for the faint of heart.

I’ve been on one heckuvah cookie bender recently. My ‘recipes to try list’ is over 29 items long for cookies alone, and trying a new one is my favorite part of every day!! From sesame, matcha, ube, & Thai tea to basil, earl grey, blueberry, & thyme, the flavors that can fit into a little ball of dough are endless.

This recipe was recommended to me by @pplq (thank you for the inspiration and the barley flour <3) and written by @trosewilde with some personal tweaks.

225 g unsalted butter, at room temperature
75 g red miso
250 g dark brown sugar
4 g salt
75 g barley flour
325 g all-purpose flour
175 g granulated sugar
6 g baking powder
4 g baking soda
1.5 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp toasted sesame oil
100 g dark chocolate discs
175 g milk chocolate discs
150 g or more sesame seeds for rolling

After years of baking, dreaming, and growing across three countries, I’m thrilled to announce the next chapter: West Sixteenth Cake Studio — a modern, made-to-order cake atelier based in Eugene, Oregon.

What started in Utrecht as Westlake’s Bakery, through pastry school at the @culinaryinstitutebarcelona , has now landed (and rooted!) in the Friendly neighborhood of Eugene — and I couldn’t be more excited to call this place home.

💖 At West Sixteenth, I specialize in contemporary wedding and celebration cakes — edible art that marks life’s most meaningful moments. Whether you’re eloping in the countryside, gathering for a milestone birthday, or honoring a big life transition, I’d be honored to create something sweet to match the magic.

The name West Sixteenth is both a wink to my last name (Westlake) and a love letter to where I now live: a point in space where I finally feel settled enough to grow something beautiful. My cakes are inspired by belonging, storytelling, community, and the joy of giving back two-fold the love I’ve received.
