I can’t tell if I want to post cake photos I’ve unintentionally been stockpiling for the last 4 months or just scratch them and re-write my feed design. 🫠

FINALLY sat down to rehash the most lovely CAKE PICNIC experience in Bellevue/Seattle, Washington! 🍰💕🌸

I joined the team on 7/18 led by Elisa, Danny, Jacob, & Evellyn to throw yet another incredible CP experience, this time as a lead volunteer! The planning and prep that went into this even was phenomenal, but nothing beats day-of action.

The cakes that we all get to witness are stunning and beyond delicious, but my favorite part has always been the people. I met this crew the first time I attended CP in Los Angeles and have stayed in touch with so many friends made working the event since. You guys are the REALEST!!!! 🥹❤️ The stories shared always knock my socks off. From college friends reuniting only a week earlier, buddies traveling internationally the night before, a neighborhood local with a passion for volunteering and championing business ethics, a best friend that shows up so you don’t have to attend alone, and an older couple looking to make pals in a new state, CAKE PICNIC never fails to draw people with the most incredible journeys to the block.

This post highlights just a few of those that I got [better] acquainted with over the course of the weekend. There were so many more wonderful folks that I got to talk to (incl. @9140_alice , @_mariamtariq_ ) whose photos I couldn’t capture this time around, but I hope y’all will come back to volunteer again!!

From LA to SF and now Seattle, I hope the journey continues adding stamps on my traveling baker passport.

Aaand, we’re back online!! 🤩 These last couple of months have been an absolute whirlwind, but life couldn’t be moving in a better direction. The silver linings are everywhere.

Running a business* has been one of the greatest and yet most rewarding challenges I’ve taken on in my life. It’s required several 14-20 hour workdays, back pain and nights left lying on the floor, honesty and accountability for my mistakes, the humbling process of learning and relearning my limits, do-overs, dropped cakes, missed meals, skipped sleep, and the whole “blood, sweat, & tears” deal.

AND YET, the fruits of this undertaking are infinitely greater than the cost. I have met so many wonderful clients who share their stories, smiles, and photos with me, those who have invited me into their lives to be a part of their celebrations, mentors who have blessed me with cake, pastry, and business wisdom, and peers who have professed the same kind of love for baking that keeps us coming back to the kitchen day in and day out. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to venture to new places to meet pastry chefs, culinary school friends and other foodies, the incredible CAKE PICNIC enthusiasts around the country (when work is the MOST fun), and traveling with cakes far and wide by plane (yes), train (sometimes), and automobile (most definitely).

I couldn’t ask for a better job. A dream job, really. However, work isn’t everything. I’m learning how to take better care of myself through moderation and balance, learning to honor the friendships that are most fulfilling and loving, recovering from food addiction, and working to put my Faith first and foremost. I hope to become a better friend, daughter, sister, business owner, vendor, partner, and fellow through this whole experience, and I thank everyone for your patience, support, and compassion in the process.

That being said (incl. the !very! important footnote below), I’ve been working on so many cakes that I’m incredibly excited to share with you all! I hope to be a little more present online (rather than solely lurking in the shadows and your dms 😂). Stay tuned 🎂❤️

Thank you so much to my lovely Portland customer who claimed this leftover cake on Saturday. 🥰 What was a last minute project that fell through became Gina’s backyard party for friends and neighbors, shared stories of our favorite strawberry basil cakes, and a lovely drive through summery green neighborhoods across town.

This is a huge “thank you” to all of the party people that make this job as fun as it is. 💌 I always love hearing about your plans, stories, and favorite reactions. Most of all, I’m grateful to be a small part in supporting these moments of connection that you create for others in your lives. Keep doing what you do best!!💃

It’s been a minute since I’ve come around with photos. This lovely spring cake (although it’s currently winter 2.5 in Oregon) I made for our home’s potluck, hosted by one of my lovely roommates and joined by plenty.

The problem: so many wonderful young folks these days (myself included) have trouble meeting new friends out of college or after moving to a new city, or have the friends but become sucked into a habit of isolation that creating quality time with good people can feel like the most daunting chore on the checklist.

The solution (as executed by said roommate): We open our doors for a few hours each week, you come as you are. Make it if you can, no sweat if you can’t! Try to talk to whoever you can. Exchange stories. Eat with a stranger. All you have to do is show up, no strings attached.

It was one of the most enjoyable evenings I’ve had in a while, and I’m so grateful for the people who are willing to wrangle the best folks they know and share the fellowship with the rest. Thank you, Avi!!

Side story: I was recently inspired by one of my friends who called up all of their middle school contacts (now in their mid 20s) in the area to hang out. In many cases, they hadn’t spoken in years, and yet several were elated to be contacted and wanted to hang out again. Absolutely sick. (Wooo, Michael!)

Anyway, that’s my nudge to you to call the friend up whom you haven’t chatted with since Junior year (hey Ethan! 👋🏻). Invite your run club to your house (thanks Ty!!) Text them back, even if it’s been months (I appreciate your patience, Ancsi 🥹💕). Send a postcard (they’re on my wall, Tessa 💌).

This weekend, I had the pleasure of making a cake for a small gathering of Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) masters swimmers in Portland! 🏊🏻‍♂️ The folks there (and really everywhere I’ve had the honor of joining a masters practice, for that matter) are so incredibly worldly, kind, supportive, and deeply enjoyable.

This being the club where I trained growing up, I was super excited to incorporate several little Easter eggs in the design. My teammates and I spent a lotta years in “the dungeon” (our pool was two floors underground), so the creative juices were fast flowing.

As I hope making cakes for couples, families and friends does for others, reflecting on that chapter of my life and making art out of the story was by far the most joyful part. I’m so thankful that I was afforded the opportunity to be part of that team and sport for so many years. My coaches, Alex, Gary, Cyndy, and Spencer, have been some of my greatest mentors and caretakers. I’ve made best friends and pseudo siblings, watched teammates thrive in their education, careers, and personal lives, reconnected at home and abroad, and enjoyed staying in touch through the years or after long periods apart.

I’m so grateful for the way that swimming continues to expand my life in beautiful ways, meeting the coolest people all over the world and reinforcing my respect for the sport as my relationship with it has changed through the years (rlly slow & rlly sore).

Anywho, thanks to you guys at the MAC for some truly great memories. Wouldn’t change a thing. ❤️🤍🖤
